Utrechtenaren,
a queer history
In October 2024, you could visit the exhibition ‘Utrechtenaren, een queer geschiedenis’ in the city hall as part of the Utrecht Queer Culture Festival.
How did people who did not fit within the sex and gender norms of their time live? Dive into the lives of preacher Hubert Schouten, lesbian icon Sylvia Bodnár, trans woman Dirkje Kuik and many others.
The exhibition contained fragments from Utrecht’s queer history, such as 18th-century funhouses. In addition, there was information about 20th-century queer self-organizations such as the interest group COC, youth organization PANN and feminist bookstore De Heksenketel. These fragments were interspersed with portraits of ‘Utrechtenaren’: writer Petronella Moens, preacher Hubert Schouten, resistance hero Marie Anne Tellegen, artist Dirkje Kuik, comedian, singer and actor Wim Sonneveld, top athlete Jeffrey Wammes and comedian, writer and presenter Claudia de Brey.
Commissioned by Queer U Stories, I designed the graphics for this exhibition.
